The Medicinal Plants Herberium

The Medicinal Plants Herbarium - detailed reference to the plants of St. Katherine...

The Medicinal Plants Herbarium has recently successfully been completed. It consists of a collection of preserved plants that have been picked, stored, catalogued, and arranged systematically in order to identify and study the plant taxonomy of the flora of Egypt and the Saint Katherine Protectorate in particular. This is a vital reference in identifying plants and it serves as a cross between a museum of priceless artifacts and a source of information of geographic distributions, chemical composition, time of flowering, and characteristics.

The herbarium also functions as a historical time-record of change in vegetation. In some cases, specimens preserved in a herbarium represent the only record of a plant's original distribution. Environmental scientists can benefit from such data when investigating changes in climate and human impact and threats. Further, future generations will have the possibility to use the collection for the purpose of studying the biodiversity, conservation, ecology and sustainable development of the plants.
